About Flowers and Men, what's the connection, what to send.

Flowers for Men, some practical helpPortions of this article will be found on our site. I created this article a few years ago and it has consistently been one of the most viewed articles on our site for over 3 years. In all honesty, I don't think it is the content of the article but rather the nude male and the intrigue that standing behind a bouquet creates. The other similar, very popular page is one in which a female is nude and I have digitally placed an orchid over her breast. Silly, I know, but these two articles have been viewed thousands of times from virtually every corner of the world.  So here is a repeat.

Buying flowers for men used to be taboo but times have changed. Many of today's men love to give and receive flowers. According to a behavioral study conducted by a leading university it was concluded that men who receive flowers were more likely to open up emotionally and be more socially interactive.

As Father's Day approaches it is a solid reminder that men really do like flowers. My uncle, Tom, who lives here in Santa Maria has carefully tended his garden for decades. The front lawn is always in bloom. If I recall, he starts his own seeds and cuttings each year rather than buying starts. What is clear is that this man loves flowers.

Florist have long known that men like flowers. It is obvious when they stand in our stores looking for just the right bouquet or the perfect rose arrangement that men enjoy giving flowers. Men love to get flowers for the same reason they send them - to be recognized. Everyone likes to feel special.

It is sometimes difficult, as a florist, when a customer calls and says "I want to send flowers to a man, but "I want masculine flowers" or "I want a plant because it is for a man" or perhaps "I want a food basket because it is for a man". I guess the difficulty lies, for me, with the narrow view of what a man likes or what is masculine. Men are as individual as women. Sure, there are generalizations such as Men typically like brighter colors and mixtures of flowers. But it is no more accurate to state that all men like red than all women like pink.

It is clear when men come into the store that they have definate likes and dislikes. Clearly men send Red Roses when romancing a woman but they don't stop there. Men often want to see what will be sent rather than a photo of it. Often drawn to unusual arrangements and color combinations men are more discriminating than many people may realize. Sadly, many men are concerned that their gift is good enough, which speaks to a number one need of most men, to be admired.

When sending flowers and plants to a man consider the following but don't be limited by it

  • Remember that men are individuals.
  • Men are stimulated by color and are visually oriented. Research shows that men prefer vivid colors such as yellow, orange and red.
  • Flower arrangements that are contemporary, linear styles or natural styles are best. Other favorites might include green or flowering plants.
  • If your recipient has a hobby, perhaps you could highlight that. For example, if he is a golfer, tuck in a box of golf balls. If he is into cars, add an auto magazine or two.
  • According to the University research, men who received flowers demonstrated better eye contact, stood in closer proximaty to others and produces more smiles than men who did not. Men who are around flowers are more esthetically oriented in every are of their lives. So ladies, if you desire more and better communication, pick a rose or two and give to your man and make sure you accompany it with a genuine message that says "I appreciate you". We are no longer constrained by machismo based messages and societal norms that preclude the average man from admitting that he likes getting flowers too. The ninties saw the emergence of a new era where men often received flowers and often admitted they liked them.

Get your man to open up, pick up some flowers today! I know my day is always better when my wife sends me flowers.
